My original plan was to have these buttons to share with friends at GeekGirlCon. As such, I figured buying a set of 50 of each button would well cover me for the weekend (LOLLERBEANS.) That ended up not being the case, of course, and that first day I realized this thing had hit the larger internet, I rush-ordered 100 more sets. Yes, I realized I STILL had underestimated their popularity.
Now, at GeekGirlCon I volunteered as the Special Agent for the Expo Hall and Artist Alley. So, in order to be able to fulfill my commitment to the convention, I recruited two other people who would don the role of "Social Justice NPC" and split the sale of the buttons evenly between the three of us. Because, after all, you purchase your Social Justice Classes from the Social Justice NPCs! The NPCs you could purchase buttons from were me, Molly Lewis in the expo hall, and Amanda Lien in Artist's Alley.
In no particular order, this is the amount the three NPCs collected*:
So the total amount of money collected over the weekend was $1456 - I also collected some money for the buttons pre-con, and post-con, which brings the total to $1516!! Not bad for selling buttons at less than $2 a pop, eh?
Now, I spent a total of $258** of the buttons from Purebuttons (which I highly recommend!) so if you deduct that from the total, you get $1258.
... and since I like nice round numbers, I went ahead and bumped that up to $1275 to donate to Planned Parenthood!
As charity drives go, I know this is actually a fairly small number. But this is the largest amount of money I have been able to present to Planned Parenthood, who I have wanted to contribute to for years. And I was able to do this all thanks to YOU GUYS. Thank you so much!
A quick thanks to various parties: thank you to GeekGirlCon, who were amazing sports about this whole thing, and embraced the idea of me selling these buttons while simultaneously volunteering from the get-go. Thanks to Amanda and Molly, who's willingness to step in to help me distribute them from their booths was invaluable. Thanks to my co-workers at my place of employment, who put up with me being hugely distracted that entire week before the con, and who were immensely supportive of the whole idea. You guys are the best.
Now, this was JUST THE BEGINNING. I am working hard to get these buttons online, and working on the expansion pack. I'll be talking about these things on my twitter account, as well as there is a mailing list here! Stay tuned for where we take these next. :)
*The difference between amounts being, of course, that some NPCs sold more sets vs. single buttons than others. :) There were also a couple people who gave extra money to go towards Planned Parenthood - thank you guys!
**I also spent a total of 193.82 on rush fees and shipping - but I'm going to happily eat this cost because it's not Planned Parenthood's fault I waited until the last week to get these all printed!
